Warning Signs of an Engine Problem

Warning Signs of an Engine Problem

When you first notice a symptom of engine trouble, you'll want to be proactive about getting to the shop for diagnostics. If you delay, then the problem may quickly escalate and require repairs that are much more expensive than should've been necessary. At Integrity Auto Care, our local mechanics can expertly identify and repair your engine trouble. Come and see us if you notice any of the following signs of an engine problem.

The Check Engine Light Illuminates

If your check engine light turns on, it doesn't automatically mean that your engine is about to go kaput. But you'll still want to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging issues can be pinpointed and addressed before they worsen. Common check engine light triggers include problems with catalytic converters, O2 sensors, and mass airflow sensors.

Common Symptoms of Engine Trouble

If you hear unfamiliar noises coming from your engine, then you'll want to further investigate. A variety of engine problems can cause a knocking sound, including bad rod bearings and a lean air/fuel mixture. A repetitive tapping sound may emerge if you're driving with extremely low oil. This noise could arise due to a lack of lubrication, which puts your engine's moving parts at risk of serious damage from metal-on-metal contact.

Discolored exhaust smoke is another cause for concern. Blue-tinged smoke suggests that oil is leaking. Black smoke is a sign that too much fuel is being burned up. White smoke could mean that your car is leaking coolant internally---with this symptom you may be dealing with a blown head gasket.

Another sign of engine trouble is power loss. If you've been driving your car for many years and it has high miles, then you don't automatically need to worry if it's gradually lost a little power over time. But an abrupt and substantial loss of power could mean that you have worn-out pistons, or another serious engine issue.
