Read a Good Tire Lately? Understanding Tire Wear

There's a wealth of valuable information available in books and online. You might not realize that you can also "read" your tires to gauge their condition and determine if they require attention. Understanding your tires' status is crucial, as a tire failure can pose serious risks to you, your passengers, and others on the road.

Recognizing Signs of Tire Wear

You assess your tires by examining the surface that contacts the road, specifically the tread area. Pay close attention to both the outer and inner edges. If you observe more wear on one edge than on the remaining tread, this could indicate that your vehicle is out of alignment. Uneven wear on either edge may suggest that your wheels are leaning excessively to one side. If you notice this, it's best to visit our service center promptly for an alignment check.

What if both edges show wear? This could indicate that your tire is underinflated. In an underinflated tire, the center does not make sufficient contact with the road, leading to more wear on the edges first. It could also mean that you're cornering too aggressively or not rotating your tires regularly.

Another pattern to watch for is wear in the center of the tire, which typically signifies over-inflation. Excess air causes the tire to make more contact with the road in the middle than on the edges, resulting in premature wear in that area.

You might also encounter smooth spots on the tread surface in irregular areas, known as cupping. This issue may be linked to suspension problems. A technician can assess your suspension to ensure it meets the manufacturer's standards.

Lastly, if you observe wear that forms a diagonal pattern across the tread, it could indicate that your tires are out of balance. This is another aspect that our service center can evaluate, and we can check for alignment at the same time.
